A Longtime Homeowner Facing Big Challenges

For the past 28 years, Ms. Hyneman has called her Milwaukie home her own. As an older adult living with a disability, maintaining her property can be difficult, especially when unexpected issues arise.

Several years ago, she reached out to Catalyst for help with a severe blackberry infestation that had overtaken her yard and begun spreading onto a neighboring property. The City had started issuing fines that quickly grew to hundreds of dollars each week until the problem was resolved. For a homeowner living on a limited income, the situation felt impossible to manage.

Catalyst stepped in and organized a team of volunteers who cleared the overgrowth and restored the property. Their hard work eliminated the safety concern and relieved a significant financial burden.

A New Need Emerges

Earlier this year, Ms. Hyneman contacted Catalyst once again, this time about her aging roof. Although it had not yet begun leaking, it had reached the end of its useful life and was preventing her from obtaining homeowners insurance.

After assessing the condition of the roof, it became clear that replacement was necessary to protect both her home and her ability to remain safely housed.

Community Partners Make It Possible

Because of the size and complexity of the project, the work was beyond what volunteers could safely complete. Catalyst partnered with Peak Performance Roofing, a longtime supporter of our mission, to take on the project.

Their crew removed the existing roof, replaced approximately half of the deteriorated plywood sheathing, installed new skylights, and completed the installation using high-quality roofing materials generously donated by Malarkey Roofing Products.

Peace of Mind for the Years Ahead

The finished roof not only looks beautiful, but it also provides the safety and reliability Ms. Hyneman needs. Most importantly, it gives her peace of mind knowing her home is protected and insurable once again.

Ms. Hyneman shared her sincere gratitude for everyone who contributed to the project. Thanks to the generosity of our partners and supporters, she can continue living in the home she has loved for nearly three decades, with the security of a safe, dependable roof over her head.
