Facing Life's Challenges Alone
Ms. Tilander has called her Sherwood home home for the past six years. At 69 years old and living on a limited income, she has worked hard to maintain her property despite the challenges she faces.
When we first met her in early 2026, she was dealing with a serious problem. Her roof had begun leaking, allowing water to enter her home and causing growing concern about further damage. Our immediate goal was simple: protect her home. Volunteers quickly stepped in to tarp the entire roof, stopping the water intrusion while a full assessment could be completed.
Unfortunately, the damage was far greater than anyone had hoped. The roof had reached the end of its life and needed to be completely replaced.
More Than a Roof
This project carried an especially personal weight for Ms. Tilander. For many years, her son had been the person she could count on whenever a major home repair was needed. Following his recent passing, she found herself navigating overwhelming challenges without the support she had always relied on.
What began as a roof replacement soon revealed deeper issues. Once the old roofing materials were removed, crews discovered that nearly two-thirds of the plywood sheathing had deteriorated and needed replacement. As that work progressed, ten damaged roof trusses were uncovered and required repair before a new roof could safely be installed.
Thanks to the generosity of Malarkey Roofing Products, the project was completed using high-quality donated roofing materials, providing Ms. Tilander with a roof that will protect her home for years to come.
Restoring Safety Around the Home
The work extended far beyond the roof. Volunteers recognized other needs around the property and embraced the opportunity to help.
They dug around the septic tank so it could be properly serviced, trimmed overgrown trees, removed an unsafe failing deck, and built a new front entry step to ensure safe access to the home. Each project helped make the property safer, more functional, and easier for Ms. Tilander to maintain.
The Gift of Neighbors Helping Neighbors
This project was made possible by 61 dedicated volunteers who generously gave 274 hours of service. Their hard work transformed not only a home, but also a difficult season in one homeowner's life.
While the repairs themselves were substantial, the most meaningful part of the project was the care shown throughout the process. Volunteers shared conversations, offered encouragement, and reminded Ms. Tilander that she was not facing these challenges alone.
A Home Repaired, A Heart Encouraged
The result is far more than a new roof and safer property. Thanks to the compassion and generosity of volunteers and project partners, Ms. Tilander now has a secure home and the peace of mind that comes with knowing an entire community cares.
This project is a powerful reminder of what can happen when neighbors come together to support one another, bringing hope, dignity, and practical help exactly when it is needed most.
