More Than Two Decades of Memories

For more than 20 years, Mr. and Mrs. Williams have built their lives in their North Portland home. It is a place filled with memories, commitment, and care. Several years ago, Mrs. Williams made the difficult decision to step away from her medical career so she could provide full-time care for a family member with special needs.
Like so many families living on a limited income, the Williams family found themselves facing a growing list of home repairs that simply exceeded their resources. Over time, one problem rose above the rest: their roof.

A Roof in Desperate Need of Help

For years, the family did everything they could to keep the leaks at bay. They patched problem areas, used different roofing materials, and tackled repairs themselves whenever possible. But despite their best efforts, the roof continued to deteriorate.
Eventually, the condition of the roof became so severe that their homeowner's insurance company flagged the property. When the roof was not replaced, the policy was canceled altogether.
The family wasn't just dealing with leaks anymore—they were living with the stress and uncertainty of knowing their home was at risk and uninsured.

Finding a Way Forward

When Catalyst learned about the Williams family's situation, we knew something had to be done. A safe, dry roof is about more than protecting a house; it provides security, stability, and peace of mind.
Unfortunately, this wasn't a project that could be completed by a volunteer team alone. The roof had reached the end of its lifespan and required a full replacement.
That is when a new partnership began.

A Community Steps Up

Catalyst reached out to Pacific West Roofing and asked if they would consider helping. Without hesitation, they stepped in with incredible generosity, donating their labor, expertise, equipment, and disposal costs to make the project possible.
At the same time, Malarkey Roofing Products donated the shingles needed for the new roof, while Catalyst provided the plywood sheathing, vents, and roofing metals.
What followed was a remarkable example of what can happen when businesses and nonprofits unite around a shared mission.

Rebuilding Protection From the Top Down

The Pacific West Roofing team removed the aging roofing system and installed all new plywood sheathing before completing the roof replacement using the donated Malarkey shingles.
The transformation was immediate.
What had once been a source of constant worry became a source of relief. The new roof not only improved the appearance of the home but, more importantly, restored protection from the elements and opened the door for the family to once again obtain homeowner's insurance.

The Difference Partnership Can Make

Throughout the project, the gratitude expressed by the Williams family was a powerful reminder of why this work matters. Behind every home repair is a family whose daily life is impacted by the condition of their home.
This project was about much more than shingles and plywood. It was about restoring security to a family that had spent years caring for others while carrying their own challenges.

A Story of Hope and Community

The Williams family now has the peace of mind that comes with knowing their home is protected for years to come.
This project also marked an exciting new partnership model for Catalyst—one that brought together nonprofit resources, business generosity, and professional expertise to meet a critical need.
Together, Catalyst, Pacific West Roofing, and Malarkey Roofing Products did more than replace a roof. They helped preserve a family's home, restore a sense of security, and demonstrate the incredible impact that is possible when a community comes together to care for its neighbors.
