How We First Met the Bigjoe Family
We first met Mr. and Mrs. Bigjoe in 2025, when we were honored to help make their home safer. Their deck had become unstable, and the steps were too narrow for Mrs. Bigjoe to use safely. Together, we replaced the deck and steps, restoring not just safety, but peace of mind.
A Call for Help Once Again
Recently, the Bigjoes reached out to us again when several areas of their home began showing serious signs of wear. The flooring in key spaces was failing, creating safety concerns that could no longer be ignored. It was clear they needed support—and we were grateful to answer that call.
Restoring Safety from the Ground Up
This project focused on repairing floors in three critical areas of the home: the dining room, the entryway near the front door where the floor structure had become compromised, and the bathroom where the washer and dryer are located. In that bathroom, the floor had deteriorated so badly that there was real concern the appliances could eventually fall through into the crawl space.
We reinforced the underlying floor structure wherever needed and installed new vinyl flooring, generously donated by Paulson’s Floor Coverings. Their gift played a vital role in making this home safe and functional once again.
Volunteers with Heart and Purpose
Our volunteer team came from the Portland Rescue Mission’s Shepherd’s Door program, and they truly embodied the spirit of service. They jumped right in, working side by side to support the Bigjoes—and each other—every step of the way. Their teamwork, care, and dedication made all the difference.
A Powerful Impact in Just a Day and a Half
In just a day and a half, nine volunteers contributed a total of 68 hours to complete the project. What could have felt overwhelming was transformed into a reminder of what’s possible when people come together with compassion and purpose.
An Ongoing Inspiration
It is always inspiring to witness neighbors helping neighbors. The Bigjoe home is now safer, stronger, and filled with renewed hope—a testament to the power of community and caring hearts.
