May 2026 - Restoring More Than a House

A Longtime Homeowner in Need

For more than 32 years, Ms. May has called her house home. At 75 years old, she has lovingly cared for the property, but years of wear and weather had taken a toll. Several years ago, Catalyst had the privilege of serving Ms. May through a Handle-It project, providing temporary repairs to stop leaks around her sliding glass doors. This year, the goal was to provide a more permanent solution by replacing the siding, three windows, and the sliding glass door.

Overcoming Unexpected Challenges

As volunteers began removing the water-damaged siding, they quickly discovered a much larger problem hidden beneath the surface. Years of water intrusion had severely weakened the wall structure, creating significant safety and stability concerns. What started as a straightforward exterior repair project became a much more extensive renovation requiring substantial structural repairs before new windows could be installed.
Despite the unexpected obstacles, the team remained determined. Volunteers adapted their plans, solved problems as they arose, and worked diligently to ensure the home was repaired correctly and safely.

Transforming a House Into a Renewed Home

Once the structural repairs and exterior improvements were completed, the transformation continued. Volunteers painted the entire home, giving it a fresh, beautiful appearance. The team also repaired issues with the front door, eliminating air leaks and ensuring it closed securely. Inside the home, volunteers carefully trimmed the new windows, completing the project with quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.
The result was more than just home repairs—it was the restoration of comfort, security, and peace of mind.

Volunteers Who Never Gave Up

Throughout the week, volunteers demonstrated incredible perseverance, flexibility, and compassion. Faced with challenges they could not have anticipated, they worked together to find solutions and see the project through to completion. Their dedication ensured that Ms. May's home would be safer, more energy efficient, and better protected for years to come.

A Birthday Celebration to Remember

The final day of the project brought an especially meaningful moment—it was Ms. May's birthday. Volunteers had the joy of celebrating with Ms. May and her daughter, who had traveled to be with her for the occasion. Together, they celebrated not only another year of life, but also the completion of a project that will have a lasting impact on her daily comfort and well-being.
It was a beautiful reminder that home repair is about much more than fixing structures. It is about restoring dignity, fostering connection, and showing neighbors like Ms. May that they are cared for, valued, and never alone.
