Catalyst is going deep
Mr Springate's story with Catalyst is a powerful example of what it means to go “deeper” in supporting community members. Addressing not only the immediate critical repairs but also identifying and resolving deeper needs that impact safety, comfort, and peace of mind.
Starting with Shelter: Roof and Awning Upgrades
Earlier this summer, Mr Springate received a brand-new roof and deck awning through Catalyst. See full stories here and here. These essential upgrades were just the beginning of a broader transformation.
Uncovering Hidden Challenges: The Home Energy Assessment
Following the initial improvements, he received a free Home Energy Assessment (HEA) from Catalyst’s Energy Conservation Program (ECP) team. During the assessment, the team encountered a rare and outdated oil-fueled radiant heater embedded in a slab foundation—an inefficient system that was no longer operational.
Mr Springate had been relying on a fireplace for heat and a window air conditioner in his bedroom for cooling. The assessment also revealed that his home lacked wall insulation and had attic insulation that was below code.
Energy-Saving Solutions at No Cost
Based on the Home Energy Assessment findings, the Energy Conservation Program team recommended the No-Cost Ductless Heat Pump offer from the Energy Trust of Oregon (ETO). This program provides qualifying individuals with a free heat pump system.
In addition, the Energy Conservation Program secured no-cost wall and attic insulation for the home.
A New Outlook on Life
Mr Springate shared that the combination of a new roof, awning, heat pump, and insulation has given him a renewed sense of hope and energy. He’s even started painting the exterior of his home—one section at a time!
