A Home Filled With Memories
Ms. Sarmiento is an 84-year-old widow who has lived in her beloved 1908 home for many years. After losing her husband—a man who lovingly cared for the property and took deep pride in maintaining their home—she has faced the growing challenge of keeping up with critical repairs on her own. The home holds decades of memories, and preserving it means preserving a lifetime of love and history.
When Help Was Needed Most
A few years ago, Catalyst partnered with dedicated volunteers to repaint Ms. Sarmiento’s home, helping to preserve and weatherproof the exterior. In 2025, a powerful windstorm caused significant damage to her fence—an essential feature for safety and security. Knowing how vital this repair was, we stepped in once again to help ensure she could continue to feel safe in her home.
Volunteers in Action
Over the course of three days, volunteers worked tirelessly to remove and replace approximately 350 feet of fencing. Thanks to their incredible teamwork and commitment, nearly the entire fence was completed within the first two days. On the final day, volunteers turned their attention to painting Ms. Sarmiento’s shed, ensuring that every scheduled volunteer had meaningful work and a chance to contribute.
Extending Kindness Beyond the Fence Line
This project became even more meaningful as volunteers formed a connection with Ms. Sarmiento’s 92-year-old neighbor, who is experiencing cognitive challenges. Unable to clear his side of the fence line, he received unexpected support from the team, who stepped in to clear debris and help transport items to the dump. His gratitude was heartfelt, and it was a true joy for volunteers to get to know him throughout the project.
The Power of Collective Service
In total, 39 volunteers contributed 233 hours of service. Their dedication and generosity transformed more than just a fence—they strengthened relationships, restored safety, and reminded everyone involved of the power of community.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Moments like these are a powerful reminder of what can happen when neighbors come alongside neighbors. By rolling up their sleeves and serving together, volunteers demonstrated love, care, and compassion in one of the most tangible ways possible.
