A First Home with Hidden Challenges
Ms McCall purchased her first home in September 2024—a charming, single-level house thoughtfully modified to support her life as a quadriplegic. But as winter set in, Ms McCall was surprised by high energy bills that put a strain on her budget. Built in 1963, the home appeared solid, and she assumed insulation had been added over the years. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
Home Energy Assessment Reveals the Truth
Through Catalyst’s Energy Conservation Program (ECP), Ms McCall received a free Home Energy Assessment (HEA). The results were surprising: the home had zero crawlspace insulation, and the attic insulation had been installed upside down, making it ineffective and wasting energy.
Partnership Brings No-Cost Solutions
Thanks to Catalyst ECP’s partnership with Trade Ally HomeRx and funding support from the Energy Trust of Oregon’s Community Partner Funding, Ms McCall received professional installation of crawlspace and attic insulation and weatherization—completely free of charge.
Lasting Benefits and Unexpected Comforts
Ms McCall now enjoys a more energy-efficient and comfortable home. Her energy costs are expected to drop significantly. An unexpected bonus? The house is noticeably quieter—something she appreciates while maneuvering around on the hardwood floors.
A Model for Community Impact
Ms McCall’s story highlights the impact of community partnerships and the importance of accessible energy solutions. Together, we’re helping people stay warm, safe, and secure in their homes—while saving money and energy.
