Caring for a Family Through Difficult Seasons

Mr. and Mrs. Davis have called their Milwaukie home their own for the past 16 years, where they are raising their two children. In recent years, their family has faced profound personal and medical challenges.
Mrs. Davis has undergone five brain surgeries, several involving serious complications and infections. Throughout it all, Mr. Davis has taken on an immense caregiving role while continuing to work tirelessly to provide for his family. With so much of their time, energy, and resources devoted to navigating these ongoing challenges, critical home repairs became increasingly difficult to manage.

From a Temporary Fix to a Lasting Solution

In February 2026, Catalyst first came alongside the Davis family by placing a tarp over their roof to stop active leaks in several areas of the home. While this provided immediate relief, it was clear that a temporary solution would not be enough. Their home needed a full roof replacement.
As work began, volunteers removed the old roofing layers and uncovered the home’s original cedar-shingle roof over skip sheathing. A substantial amount of plywood needed to be replaced. The work became even more complex when each sheet of plywood had to be carefully cut so that every splice landed directly over a truss. Though this slowed the project, our faithful volunteers worked together with determination to see it through.

A Powerful Partnership

This project brought together an incredible team of volunteers and community partners. Catalyst volunteers removed the old roof and installed new plywood, barge rafters, and fascia. Ability Plus Roofing generously installed the new roof shingles, providing the lasting protection the Davis family needed.
Once the roof was complete, Great NW Gutters generously donated and installed new gutters for the home. We are deeply grateful for the care, skill, and generosity of both Ability Plus Roofing and Great NW Gutters.
Over two days, 56 volunteer shifts were filled, contributing a remarkable 262 hours of service to this project.

Continuing to Walk Alongside the Davis Family

While completing this critical repair is meaningful, the greatest part of this project has been deepening our relationship with the Davis family. Their new roof brings safety and peace of mind, but our support does not end here.
Catalyst looks forward to returning in October to replace the family’s failing deck and continue walking alongside them as they care for one another and build a secure future at home.
