A Longtime Neighbor We Were Honored to Serve Again
Ms. Allen, a 75-year-old homeowner, has cherished her Northeast Portland home for more than three decades. Our journey with her began several years ago when Catalyst helped replace her failing roof. Over the years, we have been fortunate to return for additional repairs and projects, building not only a safer home but also a meaningful and lasting relationship.
As time passed, one of the home's greatest remaining needs became clear: the original aluminum windows had reached the end of their lifespan. They were no longer functioning properly and provided little protection from the elements, making the home less comfortable and less energy efficient.
Partners Stepping In to Make a Difference
Through our valued partnership with Renewal by Andersen, we were able to address this critical need. After assessing the home, their team confirmed that the aging windows needed replacement and generously committed to partnering with Catalyst to provide a lasting solution.
Before installation could begin, every window inside the home had to be made accessible. Furniture needed to be moved, belongings carefully packed, and rooms prepared for the work ahead.
Volunteers Preparing the Way
A dedicated team of volunteers from Shepherd's Door stepped in to help. Eight volunteers generously gave a combined 21 hours of service, assisting Ms. Allen with packing and moving furniture throughout the home. Their hard work created a safe and organized environment for the installation crew, allowing the project to move forward smoothly.
Their willingness to serve provided more than practical assistance. It offered encouragement and reminded Ms. Allen that she was surrounded by a community that cares.
New Windows, New Comfort, New Peace of Mind
With the home prepared, Renewal by Andersen installed beautiful new energy-efficient windows throughout the house, along with a new sliding glass patio door.
These upgrades will have a lasting impact, improving comfort, reducing energy costs, and providing greater peace of mind for years to come. Ms. Allen was deeply touched by the generosity shown by both Renewal by Andersen and the Shepherd's Door volunteers who helped make the project possible.
Preparing for the Final Transformation
Before the home's exterior could be painted, a team of Catalyst Handle-It volunteers completed several important preparation tasks. They installed missing siding corner protectors and removed backyard string lights, ensuring the home was ready for the final phase of the project.
A Fresh New Look
The transformation was completed through the generosity and expertise of our partners at ESP Painting. Over four days, their team carefully applied a fresh coat of paint to the home's exterior, restoring both its beauty and the protection needed after years of exposure to the weather.
The results were remarkable. Not only was the home's appearance renewed, but its longevity and resilience were strengthened as well. Once again, Ms. Allen expressed profound gratitude for the kindness, generosity, and care shown by everyone involved.
Hope Through Community
The Allen project was unique because much of the work was completed by professional construction partners, with Catalyst volunteers supporting key stages throughout the process. While it looked differentfrom many of our traditional volunteer-driven projects, the outcome remained the same.
A neighbor experienced hope through the generosity of others. A beloved home was transformed. And a relationship built on trust and care grew even stronger.
This project stands as a powerful reminder that when volunteers, community partners, and compassionate organizations come together, lives and homes can be changed in meaningful and lasting ways.
